Data acquisition begins with the physical phenomenon or physical property to be measured. Examples of this include temperature, light intensity, gas pressure, fluid flow, and force. Regardless of the type of physical property to be measured, the physical state that is to be measured must first be transformed into a unified form that can be sampled by a data acquisition system. The task of performing such transformations falls on devices called sensors. A data acquisition system is a collection of software and hardware that allows one to measure or control physical characteristics of something in the real world. A complete data acquisition system consists of DAQ hardware, sensors and actuators, signal conditioning hardware, and a computer running DAQ software. If timing is necessary (such as for event mode DAQ systems), a separate compensated distributed timing system is required.
The name, data acquisition system, implies a process that is designed to collect information, document something, or analyze a phenomenon. A technician monitoring the temperature of an oven and then logging this information on paper is in effect performing data acquisition.
Real-time data acquisition systems make it possible for enterprises to take measurements and display the information in real-time. In the world of machinery, this allows a technician to intervene quickly when there is a problem, allowing their machinery to function at peak performance.
Automated data entry was once carried out by hand. Data acquisition systems employ automation, which minimizes human error and misplacement. Additionally, storing information gathered digitally is cheaper, takes up less space than physical paper, and can be retrieved almost instantaneously. The data is also entered faster. These things don’t happen when humans are manually doing the job.
