When two plates in a capacitive digital load cell, with opposite charges are a distance apart, and a load is applied, the plates are forced to get together. Capacitive load cells use change in capacitance, unlike strain gauge load cells that uses resistance to change voltage and measures weight. Being simple in construct than a strain gauge load cell, capacitive digital load cell simpler design makes them easier to use and prevents issues that may disrupt in between like in the case of strain gauge load cells. This simple making makes this convenient to use and is more affordable to manufacture too. Overall the start-up cost is not too much.
As far as the calibration of the instrument is, this is previously done and is not required at the time of installation. During installation in the field, the operator should only zero off the dead load of the system and check for binding.
Compared to strain gauge load cells, which uses small changes in resistance to detect small changes and measure small loads, a capacitive load cell should be more sensitive. But there is a chance of being more susceptible to damage and would require frequent recalibration.
